Splice Review

My Review on Splice

The creature in this film named Dren was beautifully designed with the essence of human features and animal features. From her top half there is a clear human resemblance and from her bottom half an animal like look with long legs, perhaps rabbit like and a tail with a poisonous barb on the end. 'Dren is extraordinary, portrayed by Delphine ChanĂ©ac with CGI augmentations. Sprouting wings or gills, with a deadly barb at the end of her prehensile tail.' (Empire)

The aim in this film is to get a protein gene that will help cure various cancers and life threatening diseases. The first experiment created was a cross between many types of animal, mammal, fish, bird, amphibian, invertebrate and plant. All the types of animals chosen were herbivores so the creature would be docile. Two of these creatures were made, a male and a female. 'Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive ( Adrien Brody) are brilliant scientists creating genetically modified organisms to harvest proteins that might cure diseases. Their crowning achievement is a pair of multi-animal creations that resemble massive, fleshy worms.' (Los Angeles Times) The female creature later changed sex and became a male, this is seen in some fish and amphibians which the creature was a part of. Two males in a tight space would end up fighting and possibly kill one another.

The second experiment created had human DNA in it and was kept a secret by two scientists. This new creature was a female and started to look rat like with a small hint of human expression in its eyes. Its also hyperactive and grew fast becoming a toddler in a mater of a few days. By this time more human features appeared, such as its arms grew longer than the stumps it had before and its facial details looked more human. At this age she was docile, but as she grew older into her teens she became more uncontrollable and violent. 'She’s sweet when she gets a dolly to play with, but don’t get her frustrated.' (Chicago Sun-Times) This is probably the human gene in her that has made her like that. Later on she also changes sex becoming a male and also becomes more violent killing a few people along the way.
